Past Programs

Michigan Friends Center presents a wide range of programs that explore our core values of building community, fostering peace and social justice, supporting spiritual growth and healing, and protecting the environment.

Recent years’ programs have included annual Earth Day celebrations, a Home on Earth series, films on environmental challenges, and a discussion of Paul Hawkins’s book, Drawdown.

We have sponsored presentations on nonviolent action, prison reform, and minorities’ needs.

We have featured programs on Living Simply, a Web of Health series, and presentations on permaculture, medicinal and edible wild plants, and other healing strategies.

In conjunction with our meditation retreats, we host discussions of poetry on Spirit and Nature and other authors, to nurture our spiritual foundations.

We welcome proposals for additional programs on these themes.

Recent programs have included:

A Day of Silence and Meditation Practice, led by Carol Blotter

Saturday, June 5, 9 am – 4 pm

Each retreat is an opportunity to enjoy the quiet of the country while practicing sitting and walking meditation. This day is appropriate for anyone interested in meditation: beginners will have break-out instruction; experienced meditators can be in silence all day; those in-between can practice and have their questions answered.

Summer Solstice – a Multi-generational Celebration of the Light and Growth, led by Karen Chalmer

Sunday, June 20, potluck 6-7 pm; bonfire 7-9

We meet at the Friends Lake beach; join us for any part.  We will celebrate the longest day with a potluck dinner followed by a bonfire around which to share thoughts, stories, and songs.  All ages are welcome. Bring food to share and your own place settings.  We will provide water and herbal iced tea.  Bring something to share after dinner as well – a story, poem, song, some Solstice lore, or just your readiness to partake in what others have brought.  This will be a time to explore various ways of celebrating the light.  We welcome your spark.
